Flail
A flail (Polish: cep) is a primitive agricultural tool, which for many years was used by farmers for threshing grain. This flail consists of two large sticks: long wooden handle and a short, free swinging stick attached to the handle by either leather or metal joint. Separation of grains from their husks was done by swinging the handle causing the short stick to hit a pile of grain spread on the hard surface.
Scythe
A scythe is an old fashioned tool used for mowing (scything) grass or reaping crops. The scythe consists of a long curved sharpened blade with a pointed end. The blade is mounted at an angle on a long wooden shaft called snaith.
The snaith has a short handle (grip) attached at the right angle to the snaith for easier scything.
Wooden Rake
Wooden rakes were used in the past by farmers for raking hay and grain, and are being used to this day as a great garden tool. The wooden rakes are often made using a hard wood like oak or cherry.
Sickle
A sickle is an agricultural tool consisting of a strongly curved metal blade attached to a wooden handle and used by peasants to cut straw, grain or grass. Although this tool has been replaced by the scythe, it is still useful for cutting crops standing in water (eg, rice) or shearing small portion of grain or grass for feeding animals.
Garden Shears
This old fashioned and long handled shears were used for trimming grass and weeds. The trimmer has a long wooden handle with dual blades on a wheel on one site of the handle and a blade locking mechanism on the other site of the handle. This tool operates by pushing the trimmer along and locking closely the blades using the mechanism on the handle.
Despite the fact this tool was replaced by electrical and gas trimmers, it is still used for
trimming grass or weeds along walkways and around trees.
Hoe
Hoe is an old fashioned agricultural tool used in gardening for weed control, planting seeds, moving soil, creating narrow furrows around plants, planting seeds etc. It has a broad, rectangular blade attached to the long, wooden handle.
